Statement
Much of my current work can be described as visually narrative. Working playfully with paint, mixed media, monoprint & collagraph, I try to reach those abstract places below the surface which emerge in dreams.
Many years ago I trained and practiced as an art therapist in mental health. I believe that this experience, combined with my own vivid dream world, forms the basis for my new work .This is a framework on which to weave visual stories which touch the absurd, sometimes reaching out to the darker side; exploring the thought shadows that lurk deep within the mind. Sometimes my work is inspired by poetry and a love of words; jumbled upside-down ideas woven together to feed the imagination.
I have also created a series of works which take an affectionate look at the language of interaction, glimpsed encounters and vulnerability. I hold my own interpretations of these pieces as the titles suggest; but their intention is to tickle the imagination and create a fantasy place of their own.
My collection of photographs have most often been taken whilst travelling. When it is appropriate and possible I love to photograph people. India offers this opportunity. In these works I attempt to capture the essence of the personalities of a dignified and courageous group of people.
