For two weeks in late January I travelled to the Pacific coast of Mexico, I had signed up for an art retreat with the artist Robert Burridge whose work I have always enjoyed because of his playfulness, sense of colour and theatricality. I booked myself into a hotel in the centre of Puerto Vallarta for a week before the beginning of the retreat in order to acclimatise and to enjoy and see a little of Mexico. I was immediately enchanted. As with Morocco, the colours and the cra
In November and early December I returned to India for the first time since 2015. I have visited India many times since my first painting trip to Rajasthan many years ago now. I usually combined volunteering as an art teacher in an NGO in Delhi and Kolkata with joyful adventures exploring the country with David. This time I travelled alone. I decided to combine a week in Udaipur in Rajasthan with a few days in Mumbai, then on to Kolkata (formally Calcutta), and into the West
It is the last weekend of this years Artworks exhibition at Blackthorpe Barn (off the A14 at Rougham, near Bury St Edmunds) I am so pleased to have sold 4 pieces of work, particularly my largest painting "Dreamscape" which is quite complex and is important to me. The exhibition is looking lovely with lots of fresh new artists taking part. Here are some images showing my work in the show, the central one is Dreamscape; snippets from the private view, and a lovely shot of Zoe's

I was working on two 100 x100cm canvas paintings in my studio in France, the day on August 2nd 2016, that my life changed forever. The first, "AIRIE" I completed last year. It is full of love and mysticism. The second, I had decided I would try to finish this summer. I had provisionally called it: "MOUNTAIN LABYRINTH". I was working on it and it was nearing completion when my musician friends, Lauranne and Didier invited me to show both canvasses in the church in Marie during
I returned to my house in Marie in July. As last year, travelling to our beautiful house in the French mountains fills me with sadness and trepidation. After nearly a year the garden had become a jungle, and every mini beast in the South of France had taken up residence. I returned with my friends who helped me to tame the jungle and escort the unwanted mini guests from the premises that they no doubt consider is theirs. Once again I swapped my English home for my French one.
We are coming to the end of a successful and very happy week in the Artspace Gallery in Woodbridge. We had a busy private view on Friday night and all week our visitors have been warm and appreciative.
I am taking part in an exhibition next month with Gerry and David Spiller. It runs from Thursday 7th - Wednesday 13th June 10am- 5pm. "This exhibition by Valerie Armstrong and Gerry Spiller shows their very personal and symbolic reactions to life's experiences: Love, loss, happiness, ageing, grief. The shadows that spread their wings around us. The whispers that show us the way." ARTSPACE GALLERY 64 Thoroughfare Woodbridge Suffolk IP12 1AL www.artw.co.uk Here are some new ima
Last week I spent a lovely afternoon in my studio with a delightful young photographer: Colette Smith. https://www.colettesmith.com. As we laughed and chatted, Colette took photographs. I thought I would share some with you here. TEXTURES, LAYERS and FINGERS
From November into early December I joined my friend, Mary-Anne Bartlett and an international group of artists for an unforgettable trip to Cambodia. We travelled from the amazing temples; Angkor Wat and those in the surrounding area, through Battambang, Phnom Penh and to the sea. I also visited a hospital and several health clinics on this trip - but that is another story! I was deeply moved by the gentleness of the Cambodian people, and the fact that there were very few el
